Recommended music: Foo Fighters – Your Favorite Toy [New album drops tomorrow!]
It’s #TolkienThursday! Today, we’re at Helm’s Deep during The Two Towers to check out a custom figure of the ToyBiz Lord of the Rings Berserker Uruk-Hai!
The Berserker Uruk-hai are Saruman’s strongest soldiers. They show how nature can be shaped for battle. Saruman took away their instinct for self-preservation, turning them into living weapons. Picked for their size and fierceness, these warriors carried the White Hand and wore no armor so they could move fast and scare their enemies.
These Berserkers were the first to climb the ladders, breaking enemy morale with wild and fearless attacks. Most importantly, one Berserker carried the torch that set off the blasting fire at the Deeping Wall. This broke through Helm’s Deep’s defenses and showed that one determined fighter could bring down even the strongest walls.
ToyBiz first released the Berserker Uruk-hai figure with Sword-Swinging Attack Action in wave five of the single half-moon cards from The Two Towers. Later, it was repacked for the second wave of TTT carded figures. ToyBiz also included him in a two-pack with an Elven Archer and in a UK exclusive with Frodo, even though these two characters are never together in the story. Another Berserker Uruk figure with a bomb was planned for the fourth wave of Epic Trilogy figures, but the ToyBiz line was canceled before it was released.
Since the Berserker Uruk-hai has no armor and is covered with the white hand of Saruman, you might not think it would be the best fodder for a custom. This is true on its own, but this particular custom uses a Lurtz body as the base with the Berserker head, plus a lot of paint, to create a whole new orc. Unfortunately, ToyBiz didn’t give us Uruk-hai variants with all the helmet styles from the film, but they did include this sword with the Cirith Ungol Uruk-hai and maybe some other orcs, which helps complete the look of this custom.
Even though Haldir’s story ended tragically at Helm’s Deep in the film, as seen here, I’m glad to have some variety for the Uruk-hai army in my Helm’s Deep display. It may not be my favorite toy, or even custom for that matter, but it’s still fun.
