The Wall Playset

Recommended music: John Mellencamp – Crumblin’ Down

It’s #FunkoFriday, and I’ve been busy, but the wall is NOT crumblin’ down, so let’s take a look at the Funko Game of Thrones The Wall Display.

The Wall stands 700 feet tall and runs for 300 miles along the northern border of Westeros. It’s not just a huge block of ice and stone; it’s the main thing protecting the realm from extinction. Built with old magic and a lot of hard work, its main job is to keep out the White Walkers and their army of the dead. Without the Wall, the Seven Kingdoms would have fallen to the Long Night centuries ago.

The Wall also marks the edge of “civilization” on the maps in the series. For the southern lords, anything beyond it is seen as myth or wild land, which lets them ignore the real danger until it’s almost too late. The Wall is also home to the Night’s Watch, a group made up of outcasts, criminals, and unwanted nobles who become the “swords in the darkness.”

In 2016, around Season six, Funko tried something new with the Game of Thrones license. Instead of just making Pop! vinyls, other stylized figures, or the short-lived 1/12 scale Legacy Collection, they released a line of 3.75-inch Game of Thrones figures. The first set in this line was a playset, labeled simply as a display, which works well as a backdrop for most of the figures in the series.

Assembly was trickier than expected for this seemingly simple background diorama with included a wood-style platform at the top. The set comes with a few barrels you can drop off the wall to defend against Wildlings or White Walkers, and it also includes a 1/18 scale Tyrion Lannister figure.

The box says the display can hold up to 25 of the 3.75-inch action figures, but the line was canceled before they made even half that many characters. You could technically fill it with about 18 White Walkers, though that might look a bit silly. Luckily, I’ve found a new use for this backdrop, and it’s been part of my Mythic Legions display for most of the last decade. 😄

I’ll be sharing more toys from Westeros soon, and will have something completely different here next Friday. Happy 15th anniversary, Game of Thrones!
