Slash (Turtles in Time)

Recommended music: Florian Haack – Prehistoric Turtlesaurus

It’s #TurtleTuesday! Today, we’re taking a look at another NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Slash!

The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game, a classic side-scrolling beat ’em up, came out in the fall of 1989. By the end of 1990, it was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, with some new features that took advantage of the NES hardware. Still, fans wanted more, so Konami released a sequel in early 1991. As Nintendo prepared to launch a new console, an expanded version of the game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, arrived for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in July 1992.

Just like its NES predecessor, Turtles in Time for the SNES added new levels and characters. In the arcade game, Prehistoric Turtlesaurus was the fourth level, but on the SNES, it became the fifth because the console version included an extra stage called Technodrome: Let’s Kick Shell! After battling foot soldiers and dinosaurs, players face the prehistoric boss. In the arcade, the boss is Cement Man, but on the SNES, players take on Slash instead.

Cement Man did show up in an episode of the 1987 TMNT cartoon (as Blob Man), but the character never became very popular. By late 1990, Slash had already appeared in the animated series, Archie Comics, and the vintage Playmates Toys action figure line, so it made sense for him to be included in the video game.

When players meet Slash, he says, “You’re history, slimeballs!” (I managed to grab a screenshot before he finished saying it.😛) Luckily, he’s not too tough to defeat.

NECA originally planned to release the Slash figure in November 2019, but it came out in January 2020 instead. The figure is based on his Turtles in Time look and comes with a grenade and Slash’s signature wavy sword. It really captures the 16-bit style and was a welcome addition to my TMNT video game figure collection.
