Tyrion Lannister (1/18th scale)

Recommended music: Avenged Sevenfold – Hail To The King

It’s #WhateverWednesday and #WesterosWednesday, and because I didn’t read my notes carefully, we’re taking a look at another Funko Game of Thrones Tyrion Lannister.

Tyrion Lannister was one of the most politically ambitious characters in Game of Thrones, but he never said he wanted to be King. What he really wanted was to be heard with motivations far more nuanced than simply sitting on the Iron Throne. As a realist, he knew that in Westeros’s prejudiced society, a “dwarf” would never be accepted as a ruler.

Instead of the crown, Tyrion craved political agency and intellectual respect. He found his true calling as Hand of the King, the strategic engine behind the throne. His motivations came from proving his worth to a world and a father that constantly devalued him. He loved playing the “Game” and outmaneuvering political rivals.

In the end, Tyrion liked shaping the realm more than being its public leader. He found satisfaction in making cities stable and winning battles with his cleverness, not in the formal duties of being King. For Tyrion, intelligence was a stronger tool than any crown.

In 2016, around the time of Season six, Funko decided to try something different with the Game of Thrones license. Instead of only making Pop! vinyls, other stylized figures, or the short-lived 1/12 scale Legacy Collection, they launched a line of 3.75-inch Game of Thrones figures. The first set was The Wall playset, which came with a 1/18-scale Tyrion Lannister figure. Tyrion doesn’t have much articulation and only comes with a wine glass, but he fits well with this line’s style.

I’ll be sharing more toys from Westeros next Wednesday. Happy 15th anniversary, Game of Thrones!
