It’s #FunkoFriday, and I’ve picked a franchise you probably didn’t expect! Today, instead of talking about articulation or paint, I’m spotlighting the Funko Pop! Vinyl Saga – Alana #08.
Alana is the bold, idealistic main character in Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ comic book ‘Saga’. She begins as a soldier from the advanced planet Landfall, but her life changes when she’s assigned to guard Marko, a prisoner from the rival moon, Wreath. Rather than following her people’s prejudices, she falls in love with Marko. Together, they abandon their militarized life and have a daughter named Hazel.
By 2018, Alana’s story shows her journey from a cynical soldier to a protective, though imperfect, mother. She’s known for her quick wit, fighting skills, and determination to keep the galaxy’s war from shaping her family’s life. Possibly more so than many other strong female characters, Alana feels complex and real as she struggles with substance abuse while working as an underground Circuit performer and deals with the constant stress of being on the run.
By the middle of the series, Alana is still the emotional center of her family. Even after facing terrible losses, her story is about choosing love instead of division. This makes her one of the most relatable and strong characters in modern comics.
Although the comic started in 2012, Image Comics took a long time to release licensed Saga merchandise. There were a few Saga action figures in two-packs from MacFarlane Toys, but I decided to collect the Funko versions since more than a dozen Pop! Vinyl figures (including variants) came out in 2018. This figure shows Alana with a military blaster, plus the classic oversized head and blank eyes of the Funko Pop! style.
