“We have 999 blog posts here, but there’s room for a thousand. Any volunteers?”… This #WhateverWednesday is also #WesterosWednesday. HBO’s Game of Thrones just turned 15, so let’s head to Westeros and take a look at the Funko Game of Thrones Legacy Collection The Hound!
Sandor Clegane starts out the Game of Thrones series as Joffrey Baratheon’s tough, scarred enforcer. He’s known for his fear of fire and deep hatred for his brother, The Mountain, which makes him seem like just a brute at first. Still, you can see a bit of humanity in the way he looks out for Sansa Stark during the harsh times in King’s Landing during season two.
During the Battle of the Blackwater, Sandor’s loyalty breaks. Scared by the wildfire, he leaves the Lannisters and escapes the city. Later, after winning a trial by combat against the Brotherhood Without Banners, he kidnaps Arya Stark, hoping to ransom her for money.
What follows is a dark, gritty journey. As they travel through a war-torn Westeros, Sandor ends up teaching Arya how to survive. Their story together ends in the Vale after a tough fight with Brienne of Tarth. Badly hurt and beaten, the Hound asks Arya to end his suffering, but she refuses and leaves him behind.
In 2014, when Season Four came out, Funko did something new instead of its usual Pop! vinyl figures. Gentle Giant sculpted the Legacy Collection of 1/12 scale figures, and this one stands out for its amazing detail. The weathered armor and chainmail look great for a 6-inch figure, and it really looks like The Hound actor Rory McCann.
The figure has more than 20 points of articulation and comes with great accessories, like two swords and a removable hound-head helmet with a working visor. Some collectors have had issues with joints breaking, but mine has stayed in good shape so far.
I’ll share more toys from Westeros next week. Happy 15th anniversary, Game of Thrones!
