For this #StarWarsSaturday, we’re back to looking at trading cards from a different part of the saga with Topps The Mandalorian: Journey of The Child!
In the first four episodes of The Mandalorian, the character first called “The Asset”—later known as “The Child,” “The baby,” Baby Yoda, and finally Grogu—changes from a valuable bounty to the Mandalorian’s ward. In episode 1, Din Djarin finds the 50-year-old infant on Arvala-7. When faced with a choice, Mando kills the droid IG-11 to protect the child instead of letting it be “terminated.”
In episode 2, called ‘The Child,’ Mando fights a huge Mudhorn. During the battle, Grogu shows he can use the Force by lifting the creature and saving Mando’s life. The effort leaves Grogu tired and unconscious.
In episode 3, ‘The Sin,’ Mando initially delivers Grogu over to the Imperial Client in exchange for Beskar steel. Feeling guilty, he goes back to the Imperial base, defeats the stormtroopers, and rescues Grogu. They become fugitives from the Guild, but manage to escape Nevarro with help from the Mandalorian covert.
In episode 4, ‘Sanctuary,’ Mando looks for a safe place to hide on the planet Sorgan. Grogu gets to relax for a while, playing with local children and eating frogs. When a bounty hunter finds them, Mando understands that Grogu will never be safe in one spot, so they continue their journey together.
The Topps The Mandalorian: Journey of The Child trading card set, released in April of 2020, was likely the first Baby Yoda merchandise to feature images from the entire first season. Each box comes with a 25-card base set, five illustrated cards, and two parallel cards. The set focuses on the bounty Mando protects, then called “The Child,” and highlights Baby Yoda’s adventures and memorable moments from the first season of the Disney+ series.
