Happy #FunkoFriday! Today, we’re featuring the Funko Pop! Vinyl Saga – Alana with Baby Hazel (Specialty Series) #13!
Alana is the bold and idealistic main character in Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ comic book ‘Saga’. She starts out as a soldier from the advanced planet Landfall, but her life changes when she is assigned to guard Marko, a prisoner from the rival moon Wreath. Instead of following her people’s prejudices, she falls in love with Marko. Together, they leave their military lives behind and have a daughter named Hazel. Alana’s story shows her growth from a cynical soldier to a protective, though imperfect, mother. She stands out for her quick wit, fighting skills, and determination to keep the galaxy’s war away from her family.
Although the comic started in 2012, Image Comics took a long time to release licensed Saga merchandise. The relatively small amount of Saga merchandise—especially compared to other major Image Comics titles like The Walking Dead—stems from a mix of creative philosophy, legal control, and the “un-adaptable” nature of the story.
Unlike Marvel or DC characters, owned by corporations with massive licensing departments, Saga is 100% creator-owned by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. They have full veto power over every piece of merchandise. They have been protective of the brand, preferring to focus on the comic itself rather than turning it into a “lifestyle brand.”
Thankfully, Funko released more than a dozen Pop! Vinyl figures (including variants) in 2018. Like last week’s Alana figure, this one still features the classic oversized head and blank eyes of the Funko Pop! style, but she has now traded in her military blaster for the infant version of Hazel swaddled in a blanket and seen on many covers early in the series.
