Daenerys Targaryen

It’s #WhateverWednesday and #WesterosWednesday! HBO’s Game of Thrones series is now 15, and today we’re taking a look at the Funko Game of Thrones Legacy Collection Daenerys Targaryen!

Over the first four seasons of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen evolves from a timid, exiled pawn into a strong and independent leader determined to reclaim the Iron Throne. In Season 1, her abusive brother forces her to marry Khal Drogo, the Dothraki warlord. She learns to adapt, finds her own voice, and eventually falls in love. After Drogo dies, Daenerys walks into his funeral pyre and comes out unharmed with three newly hatched dragons, marking her as a messiah-type figure and the “Mother of Dragons.”

In season 2, Daenerys leads her starving followers on a journey to Qarth. There, she faces political betrayal, gets her stolen dragons back from the Warlocks in the House of the Undying, and gains the wealth she needs to build an army.

In seasons 3 and 4, Daenerys turns her attention to Slavers’ Bay in Essos and earns the title “Breaker of Chains.” She outwits the masters of Astapor to gain the Unsullied army, then goes on to conquer Yunkai and take control of Meereen.

By the end of Season 4, Daenerys decides to stay in Meereen as its queen so she can learn how to rule, not just conquer. Her story runs alongside the chaos in Westeros, showing the rise of a new political and military power driven by her strong anti-slavery beliefs and her ever-growing dragons.

When Season Four was released in 2014, Funko tried something new instead of its usual Pop! vinyl figures. Gentle Giant created the Legacy Collection of 1/12 scale figures, and Daenerys Targaryen #05 is a solid first version of the character at this size. The figure is based on her Dothraki outfit from season 1 and has fabric-like textures. Her braided hair is sculpted to fall naturally over her shoulders. The figure has about 24 points of articulation, including a rare mid-torso joint. It also comes with a well-scaled infant Drogon that fits into a slot on Daenerys’s shoulder, recreating the famous final scene of Season 1.

My figure has stayed intact, but many collectors know the plastic is brittle and the joints can break easily, even when new. The head sculpt is not painted very well, so the figure lacks a good likeness to Daenerys actor Emilia Clarke. Finally, the figure’s small feet and the lack of stand peg holes make it challenging to pose.

Overall, despite its flaws, the figure is a good addition to the GOT collection as it represents Daenerys before her rise to power. Just make sure you handle it with care.

I’ll share more toys from Westeros next week. Happy 15th anniversary, Game of Thrones!
