It’s another #FunkoFriday, and today we’re featuring the Funko Pop! Vinyl Saga – Ghus In Pajamas (Flocked) #16!
Ghüs (pronounced ‘goose’) perfectly shows how Saga mixes cute moments with harsh reality. He first appeared in 2013 for a short cameo in issue #12 as a small, seal-like character in a yellow raincoat and overalls. He soon went from being a cute background figure to becoming a strong protector and moral anchor before the series took its big break in 2018.
As war rages across the galaxy and the adults navigate complicated politics, Ghus stands for the peaceful, simple life that the main characters long for. He spends his days herding his beloved walrus-puppies on Quietus and sums up his humble nature to Prince Robot IV by saying, “I am Ghüs. I chop wood.”
In a world full of troubled, morally complex characters who often make bad choices, Ghüs stands out as a pure-hearted and fiercely protective guardian. He gives both readers and other characters a rare sense of safety.
Even though the comic began in 2012, Image Comics waited a while before releasing official Saga merchandise. Rather than going for broad licensing, the creators chose smaller, high-quality partnerships. They opened an official artist shop featuring apparel, limited-edition prints, and special collectibles. Most regular items, like pins and figures, have been sold directly by Image rather than by major toy distributors. The limited merchandise is not a failure; it is a choice by the creators to keep Saga a pure comic book experience.
Luckily, Funko released over a dozen Pop! Vinyl Saga figures (including variants) in 2018, focusing on collectors instead of the mass market. The Ghus figure looks a lot like the character, and the flocked texture makes it even cuter. The only downside is that his axe accessory has come off the body, and I think it could have been attached better if the figure were not flocked. If you think this one is cute, just wait until I review the plush version. 😄
