Hasbro Slimer

It’s #SomethingElseSunday, and we’re “ready to believe you” as we check out the Hasbro Ghostbusters Plasma Series Slimer!

In the original 1984 Ghostbusters film, Slimer began as a nameless, gluttonous phantom haunting the Sedgewick Hotel. Envisioned by Dan Aykroyd as an homage to John Belushi and listed in the script simply as the “Onionhead Ghost”, he served a vital narrative role as the Ghostbusters’ first successful catch, proving their technology worked and launching their ghost-busting business into the mainstream.

Slimer’s massive popularity with audiences completely transformed his role in the franchise. When the animated show The Real Ghostbusters began in 1986, he was officially named “Slimer” and became the team’s friendly, mischievous firehouse resident pet and comic relief. This version of Slimer appeared on all kinds of merchandise, especially on the Hi-C Ecto-Cooler juice boxes.

Because he was so popular in the cartoon, Slimer came back in the live-action movies. In 1989’s Ghostbusters II, he even drove Louis Tully to the museum on a bus. The expanded universe and video games have given him different backstories, like being a hotel guest or a symbol of greed. But as Ray puts it, he is a “focused non-terminal repeating phantasm, or a Class 5 Full Roaming Vapor. A real nasty one, too.” Over the years, Slimer has evolved from a scary nuisance to the team’s main mascot, blending the spooky science of Ghostbusters with pure pop-culture fun.

The Hasbro Ghostbusters Plasma Series Slimer, which was only available through the HasLab Ectomobile campaign, is likely the most accurate and detailed 6-inch version of Slimer yet. Hasbro really captured the original “Onionhead” look, with folds of ectoplasmic fat, rows of teeth, and an expression that matches his look in the live-action movies instead of the cartoon.

The figure is made from translucent green plastic, has good articulation, and comes packaged with a clear flight stand, and scales much better with other 1/12-scale Ghostbuster figures than the Mattel versions of the character. He doesn’t include extra accessories like the old NECA release, but he’s a real standout and a must-have for any Ghostbusters collection if you can find him.
