It’s #TurtleTuesday, so let’s check out the NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Super Shredder!
In the 1991 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, Super Shredder appears briefly at the end. After tracking down the ooze, a cornered Oroku Saki consumes the final vial to destroy the Turtles. Granted, this is not exactly how we’ve seen mutagen work in the past, but it triggers an instant transformation, mutating him into Super Shredder, a hulking, 7-foot behemoth covered in oversized, razor-sharp armor spikes for some reason.
Fueled by rage, Super Shredder never directly fights the Turtles. Instead, he destroys the dock’s support pillars, which causes the pier to collapse and traps him under the wreckage. His final moments show that Saki’s endless hatred led to his downfall.
To create Super Shredder’s huge look, the filmmakers chose professional wrestler and nWo co-founder Kevin Nash to wear the huge prosthetic suit. After parents complained about violence in the first film, the studio limited weapons and fighting in the sequel. As a result, Super Shredder never uses his bladed armor against the Turtles and instead is defeated by the collapsing dock.
NECA released this version of Shredder from the 1991 movie in 2020. The large 9.5″ figure looks impressive, and its sculpt shows off all the details that were hard to see in the film’s dark scenes.
The articulation is surprisingly fluid for a figure this bulky. Shredder comes with a new fabric cape, a Bishamon yari spear, a TGRI ooze canister, and seven swappable hand options. This hefty deluxe release completely blows the vintage Playmates toy out of the water. The following year, NECA released it again, this time with new paint styles inspired by the European movie poster, and another with darker clothes as a nod to the Chef Boyardee mail-in figure.
Any version of this figure you pick up will be well worth it. Overall, this figure is a great value for the price, and a must-have if you want a complete display from the 1991 TMNT movie.
