Ned Stark

It’s #WhateverWednesday and #WesterosWednesday! HBO’s Game of Thrones series is now 15, and today we’re taking a look at the Funko Game of Thrones Legacy Collection Ned Stark!

Eddard “Ned” Stark is only in Season 1, but his strict sense of honor and tragic death shape the first four seasons of Game of Thrones.

Ned, as Lord of Winterfell and Hand of the King, follows a strong moral code. When he learns that King Robert Baratheon’s children are actually Cersei’s through her affair, his sense of honor leads to his downfall. He tries to protect Cersei’s children by warning her to escape before he reveals the truth, but this act of kindness turns against him. After Robert dies, Ned is betrayed, imprisoned, and then executed by King Joffrey’s order.

Ned’s death is the main event that starts the War of the Five Kings and drives the story for the next three seasons. His oldest son, Robb, heads south to get revenge, supported by northern bannermen who remain loyal to Ned. With their family’s protection gone, Ned’s other children—Arya, Bran, Sansa, and Jon Snow—are separated and must survive on their own, holding onto their father’s values.

At the same time, Tyrion, Tywin, and Littlefinger move through a world where Ned’s honor is seen as a weakness. This shows the series’ theme that integrity often loses to cruelty. In the end, Ned Stark’s role sets the stage for the whole story, and after he is gone, everyone else must change, become corrupt, or risk dying.

When Season Four came out in 2014, Funko did something different from its usual Pop! vinyl figures. Gentle Giant made the Legacy Collection of 1/12 scale figures, and Ned Stark #06 is a solid version of the character. The figure has nice details on his leather gambeson, including a small Hand of the King pin. He comes with a regular broadsword that fits in his scabbard and also Ice, his massive Valyrian steel greatsword.

Like other early Funko Legacy figures, the joints can be fragile, but I haven’t had any problems with breakage when posing it gently. While it doesn’t look exactly like Sean Bean, who plays Ned Stark, it’s an affordable figure for Game of Thrones fans and represents an important character from the series.

I’ll share more toys from Westeros next week. Happy 15th anniversary, Game of Thrones!
