It’s another #FunkoFriday, and today we’re featuring the Funko Pop! Vinyl Saga – Lying Cat #11!
In the comic series Saga, Lying Cat is a big, blue, sphinx-like alien cat who is both a loyal companion and a moral guide to the bounty hunter called The Will. Her main trait is that she cannot tolerate lies. Whenever someone nearby knowingly says something untrue, she immediately growls her famous catchphrase: “Lying.”
However, Lying Cat does not operate like a regular lie detector you see on TV. She responds to the speaker’s intent, only calling out lies when the person knows they are not telling the truth. This special ability makes her very valuable in the comic’s dangerous universe, helping to reveal denial, bluffs, and other tricks.
In the issues released before 2018, Lying Cat changes from just a strong tracking tool into a character with real empathy. She is much more than comic relief or a simple plot device. In a universe full of propaganda and war, she acts as a guardian of truth and often reveals other characters’ hidden feelings as her presence alters every room and negotiation she enters.
One of Lying Cat’s most powerful moments comes when she comforts a young victim of exploitation. When the child sadly says they are “dirty,” Lying Cat gently replies, “Lying.” This moment shows her real purpose in the story. She not only catches enemies in lies but also helps break the painful, false beliefs victims have about themselves, giving them comfort and healing.
Over the years, Image Comics and creators Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples have teamed up with several companies to make official merchandise for Saga’s breakout star. Besides the McFarlane Toys 5″ scale action figure, there’s an 8″ resin statue, apparel from the official Saga Threadless Shop, enamel pins and patches, and a 19″ talking plush. They also licensed the character to Funko.
In 2018, Funko released more than a dozen Pop! Vinyl Saga figures, and almost half of them were Comics Series #11: Lying Cat. Her mold was first used for this standard teal Previews Exclusive (PX) version, which matches the color most often seen in the comic. I’ll get into some variants next week.
