Shredder (Turtles in Time)

Recommended music: Avenged Sevenfold – Shepherd Of Fire

It’s #TurtleTuesday! Today, we’re taking a look at one last NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder (for now)!

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, Shredder is the main villain and the final boss. He starts out as a dramatic thief, then becomes a dimension-hopping tyrant, and finally turns into an overpowered mutant god.

The story begins in New York City when Shredder steals the Statue of Liberty during a live news broadcast. He does this to embarrass the city and lure the Turtles into a trap. When the Turtles break into the Technodrome, they find Shredder driving a huge, heavily armed tank. In a clever gameplay moment, he hides behind a window, so players have to throw Foot Soldiers at the screen to break his defenses.

After his tank is destroyed, Shredder uses a time device to send the Turtles into a wild time warp. This twist sends them to different eras, like prehistoric times, pirate days, and the far future. The Turtles have to fight through each period to get another chance to face him.

The final battle happens in 1992 on a burning platform near Liberty Island. Wanting to defeat the Turtles for good, Shredder uses mutagen to become Super Shredder. In this last fight, he moves very fast and attacks with fire, ice, and de-mutation blasts. The Turtles must beat his mutated form to free New York, return the Statue of Liberty, and fix the timeline.

NECA included this Shredder figure in their Turtles in Time line in summer 2020. It features a pixel-art paint job with cross-hatching over bright colors to look like the 16-bit arcade game on a CRT screen. The sculpt captures his arcade design well and maintains the solid articulation seen throughout the 7” line. He comes with a soft goods cape, a beam sword (like a lightsaber), energy blast effects, and two extra pairs of hands. Overall, he’s a great addition to my TMNT video game figure collection.
