It’s #WhateverWednesday and #WesterosWednesday! HBO’s Game of Thrones series is now 15, and today we’re taking a look at the Funko Game of Thrones Legacy Collection Jaime Lannister!
Over the first four seasons of Game of Thrones, Jaime Lannister changes from an arrogant villain into a much more complex and humbled antihero.
In the first two seasons of Game of Thrones, Jaime is proud, skilled, and deeply loyal to Cersei. As the Kingslayer, he embodies Lannister cruelty, from his memorable moment with Bran Stark at the end of the series premiere to fighting Ned Stark later that year. He views the world with a cynical attitude and feels safe behind his golden armor and strong sword skills, even after Robb Stark captures him.
Season 3 changes everything for Jaime. After Locke captures him, Jaime loses his right hand, which was the source of his skill and pride. This loss makes him rethink who he is. Without his fighting ability, he forms an unexpected friendship with Brienne of Tarth. In a key scene at Harrenhal, Jaime opens up and explains that he killed the Mad King to save King’s Landing from wildfire, turning what he saw as his biggest shame into a heroic act.
By season 4, Jaime comes back to King’s Landing as a changed person. He refuses Tywin’s order to rule Casterly Rock, keeps his promise to Catelyn Stark by sending Brienne to protect Sansa, and starts learning to fight with his left hand. Cersei treats him coldly, and he notices empty pages in the Kingsguard White Book. Jaime decides to break away from his family’s harmful legacy and build a more honorable life.
When Season Four premiered in 2014, Funko tried something new instead of its usual Pop! vinyl figures. Gentle Giant created the Legacy Collection of 1/12 scale figures, and Jaime Lannister #07 is a solid choice with more than 20 points of articulation. The figure shows Jaime in his Kingsguard armor from the first season; the sculpt has impressive detail, and the long white cape, an uncommon look, is done well. The paint job is solid, with different shades of copper and gold, and it looks good.
The face on the figure looks like actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from most angles. Unlike the first six figures in the series, Jaime’s figure does not have problems with brittle plastic. The main issue is that his thumb and finger are joined together, so he cannot hold his longsword with the Lannister lion head pommel unless you separate the fingers yourself. Overall, it’s an affordable option for Game of Thrones fans and a good way to represent an important character from the show.
I’ll share more toys from Westeros next week. Happy 15th anniversary, Game of Thrones!
