Recommended music: Daniel Pemberton – Eternos in Ruins
It’s #MastersMonday, and I’m excited to share something new. Since my action figures are still packed away, waiting for a new display, some recent comics will be coming out to play. This week, we’re taking a look at Masters of the Universe: Legends of Eternia, Issue No. 1!
Published by Tokyopop as a tie-in to the new film universe, Masters of the Universe: Legends of Eternia #1 arrived a few weeks ago as a unique manga-style entry in the MOTU franchise. Since it came out the same day as Wings of Fate #2 [see last week’s post], it was a no-brainer to grab this book then. Visually, the book is fresh. Written by Amanda Deibert and illustrated by Emanuele Ercolani, the story uses a framework that bridges the fifteen-year gap in the movie’s timeline, but in a different way than the Wings of Fate series.
I believe each chapter in the five-issue mini-series will focus on a different character’s perspective. The series kicks off with a tale from a young Cringer and the chaos he endured when Eternia was under attack. I’m not too familiar with Tokyopop or manga in general, and I even expected to read this book right to left, but it is pretty straightforward.
I’m still not going to give much of the story away and have removed some dialogue from these pages, but it’s a quick read you’ll likely enjoy if you liked the film.
The manga-inspired artwork depicts Eternia with a new aesthetic while the long-familiar characters remain recognizable. Ultimately, it serves as a fun, lighthearted tie-in that enriches the universe rather than feeling like basic studio promotion. I can’t wait for issue number two to drop next month.
