Since my action figures are still packed away, waiting for a new display, the cards keep coming out to play.
Topps launched the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The base set includes 100 cards that cover stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series from that era, including the creation and destruction of the Death Star.
Today, I’m showing the next four base cards, which focus on characters who first appeared in A New Hope.
Davish “Pops” Krail (Gold Five) is a veteran Rebel Y-wing pilot who acts as a wingman to the Gold Leader [see Wednesday’s post] during the Battle of Yavin. He flies in the initial trench run against the Death Star, alerts Red Leader following the destruction of his squadron, and is eventually shot down by Darth Vader.
I have no idea how the numbering system is meant to work, but Dex Tiree (Gold Two) is also a Y-wing pilot in Gold Squadron and flies with Gold Leader and Gold Five. During their attack run in the Death Star trench, Tiree is the first Rebel pilot to be shot down and destroyed by Vader.
Han Solo starts off as a cynical and self-serving smuggler who agrees to help Luke and Obi-Wan only for the money. Although he at first takes his payment and leaves the Rebellion, his conscience ultimately wins over him. He then suddenly returns during the Battle of Yavin and blows Darth Vader’s TIE fighter off the end of Luke’s wing, and this vital last-minute action provides Luke with the clear shot he needed to destroy the Death Star, thus completing Han’s change from a mercenary to a galactic hero.
Before the battle, Chewbacca serves as Han Solo’s loyal Wookiee co-pilot, smuggler partner, and muscle, focused on collecting debts and maintaining the Millennium Falcon. When Han decides to walk away, Chewbacca’s conscience helps steer them back, as he co-pilots the Falcon to clear Darth Vader’s fighter from Luke’s tail. His loyalty enables the Death Star’s destruction, cementing his transition from outlaw to Rebel hero… even if he doesn’t get a medal at the throne ceremony.😄
