Recommended music: Borknagar – Steingard
It’s #FourHorsemenFriday, and since my action figures are still packed awaiting a new display, archive posts will come into play. After 1100+ posts on the blog, we’ll have to revisit some older stuff for now.
The Dean Jones track I used with the original post is fun and upbeat, but it really only matches Snagg’s name, not his personality. Since I wanted something that fit a sneaky, dagger-wielding goblin thief from the Legion of Arethyr, I started searching for music with a mischievous vibe for underground adventures.
I tried out a lot of dungeon synth tracks, a style that began in the early 1990s as a branch of the Norwegian black metal scene. Musicians used simple synthesizers to create ambient, medieval-sounding intros or interludes. Even though this music is great for reading fantasy stories or playing RPGs, it still didn’t feel right for my goblin thief action figure.
Luckily, I came across the 1996 track “Ved Steingard” (which means “By the Stone Wall”) by the Norwegian progressive/black metal band Borknagar. The guitars and melodies in this song feel like a much better match for Snagg sneaking through caves and collecting treasures.
