Recommended music: Quiet Riot – Bang Your Head (Metal Health)
It’s #SomethingElseSunday, and since my action figures are still packed, waiting for a new display, archive posts will come into play. After 1100+ posts on the blog, we’ll continue to have to do some reruns for now.
When I first wrote about the Muppet Chef, I apparently couldn’t even decide on a single song, instead opting for a medley of clips from The Muppet Show with the Swedish Chef. Now, I think I’ve finally found one song that really fits the character.
“Sabre Dance” is a lively orchestral piece written by Aram Khachaturian in 1942 as the ending to his ballet ‘Gayane’. The music really matches the Swedish Chef and his famous kitchen from The Muppet Show, as seen in the Palisades toy playset. Its fast pace and strong beat reflect the wild energy you see in most Muppet sketches with the Chef.
The music was first written for an acrobatic sword dance, which makes it easy to picture the Chef swinging cleavers, pots, and knives while ingredients fly everywhere. Pop culture often uses this piece to signal chaos in variety acts, circus comedy, and plate-spinning scenes. This tradition matches the vaudeville style of Jim Henson’s show. The mix of serious classical music and the Chef’s kitchen chaos brings out the silly humor of a scene with the Swedish Chef.
