Rogue One: Mission Briefing Part 27

Recommended music: Max Richter – On The Nature Of Daylight

On this #StarWarsSaturday, we’re looking ahead to the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December and checking out trading cards from Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing. Today, I’m sharing base card number 102 – Mon Mothma!

Since my action figures are still packed away, waiting for a new display, the cards keep coming out to play.

Topps released the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set has 100 cards that cover stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series from that era, including the creation and destruction of the Death Star. The set also includes 10 cards featuring characters and scenes from the official Rogue One Teaser Trailer, released in April 2016.

During the promotional campaign for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the familiar face of Mon Mothma served as an important narrative bridge connecting the prequel era, the Clone Wars animated series, and the Original Trilogy. Though her screen time was brief, trailers, print media, and press events emphasized her presence to connect the film to the established Star Wars story.

Lucasfilm put Mon Mothma in the spotlight to show that Rogue One was a direct lead-in to the OT, specifically A New Hope. Early trailers set the tone by showing her giving Jyn Erso the mission to steal the Death Star plans. In outlets like Entertainment Weekly, producers described Mothma as the film’s political backbone, highlighting how different Rebel groups came together under her leadership.

The campaign also highlighted Genevieve O’Reilly, making her return a key topic in press interviews. O’Reilly first played the young senator in Revenge of the Sith, though I’ve spotted her in crowd shots; her speaking scenes did not make it into the theatrical version of the film. Thankfully, much of this footage has made it to physical media and appears in various fan edits. Lucasfilm presented O’Reilly’s casting in Rogue One as a chance for her to revisit the role and as a nod to Caroline Blakiston’s original performance in Return of the Jedi.

Lucasfilm also used Mon Mothma’s role in Rogue One to connect different parts of the Star Wars franchise. During the film’s press tour, they announced that O’Reilly would also voice the character in Star Wars Rebels. Her story in the animated series, promoted alongside the movie, showed her escape from the Imperial Senate and her call to form the Rebel Alliance. Though it was great to see Mon in animated form during seasons two and three of Clone Wars, and later seasons three and four of Rebels, the character was fully fleshed out with O’Reilly’s acting during both seasons of Andor.
