On this #StarWarsSaturday, we’re looking ahead to the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December and checking out trading cards from Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing. Today, I’m sharing base card number 103 – Captain Cassian Andor!
Since my action figures are still packed away, waiting for a new display, the cards keep coming out to play.
Topps released the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to help build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set includes 100 cards covering stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series from that era, including the creation and destruction of the Death Star. The set also includes 10 cards featuring characters and scenes from the Rogue One Teaser Trailer, which came out a few months earlier.
During the summer and fall of 2016, as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was being promoted, Diego Luna helped audiences get to know his character, Captain Cassian Andor. He also helped set the film apart from other stories in the Star Wars franchise.
The campaign really kicked off at Star Wars Celebration Europe in London in July 2016. At the Rogue One panel, Luna introduced Cassian as a morally complex and practical Rebel Intelligence officer who keeps Jyn Erso and the main team grounded. He also talked about the on-screen relationship between Cassian and his reprogrammed Imperial droid, K-2SO, played by Alan Tudyk.
As more trailers came out and press events picked up in the fall, Luna became one of the main voices explaining the movie’s realistic tone. He pointed out that Rogue One is about regular people, not Jedi, as the story focuses on characters who depend on their beliefs and real-life skills instead of Force powers. In interviews, he talked about Cassian’s moral struggles, describing him as a tough fighter who has to make hard choices for the Rebellion. We see these kinds of decisions early in the film, and many times in the Andor television series.
Luna also played an important role as an international ambassador, leading press events in Mexico with director Gareth Edwards. He often talked about using his natural Mexican accent for a lead hero in a big movie, calling it an important step for Latino representation around the world.
