Muppet Show Ghosts (Reblog)

Recommended music: Vincent Price – You’ve Got a Friend

It’s #SomethingElseSunday, and since my action figures are still packed, waiting for a new display, archive posts will come into play. After 1100+ posts on the blog, we’ll continue to have to revisit some old toys for now.

When I first wrote about the Muppet Show Ghosts, I shared a clip of the Ghosts performing “I’m Looking Through You” by the Beatles. While not one of the most famous songs from their 1965 album Rubber Soul, the transparency pun in the title worked perfectly for this skit, which was a UK-exclusive spot when it first aired in 1977. This also fits the blog because it was one of the first times I used the transparency tool to overlay my action figures with a vintage backdrop.

Another song that works well with these spirits is the 1971 classic “You’ve Got a Friend” sung by Carole King and James Taylor. The tune appears later in episode 119 of The Muppet Show. The closing number features guest star Vincent Price singing with Uncle Deadly, a handful of other monsters, and a pair of Muppet Ghosts.

Though the sketch appeared on official VHS compilations as early as 1985, it was curiously cut from both the Muppet VHS release ‘Monster Laughs with Vincent Price’ and the Region 1 DVD version of The Muppet Show: Season One. Thankfully, the sketch wasn’t lost, as it appeared on a later German release and is now available in higher definition on Disney Plus.
