Recommended music: Clutch – Electric Worry
It’s another #TurtleTuesday, and since my action figures are still packed, waiting for a new display, archive posts will come into play. After 1100+ posts on the blog, we’ll keep revisiting some old toys for now.
When I first posted the NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Leatherhead figure, which is based on his look from the second TMNT arcade game, I added a cover of the music from the level where he shows up as a boss, ‘Bury My Shell at Wounded Knee.’ While the cartoon version of Leatherhead fits well with Hank Williams’ 1952 song “Jambalaya,” the video game uses a much more modern track that repurposes lyrics from the Allman Brothers Band.
To me, Clutch’s “Electric Worry” perfectly links Leatherhead’s Cajun swamp-croc roots with the excitement of an arcade boss fight. The song’s loud opening, strong guitar riffs, and swampy harmonica bring to mind the wild energy of a mutant alligator coming out of the Louisiana bayou for a showdown on a moving train. It also matches Leatherhead’s unpredictable and aggressive personality in the TMNT universe.
The song’s hard-rock rhythm fits the fast pace of a 16-bit Konami boss fight. Combined with NECA’s pixelated, cell-shaded paint job, the figure feels less like a nostalgic toy and more like a scene from a movie. “Electric Worry” sets the mood perfectly, mixing southern blues-rock with the energy of this arcade villain.
