Gollum (w/ Electronic Sound Base) (Reblog)

Recommended music: Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place

It’s #TolkienThursday, and since my action figures are still packed up and awaiting a new display, toys from the archives will keep coming into play.

There are many excellent pieces from Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings scores that fit the character of Gollum and his ToyBiz LOTR action figures, but I found something outside the soundtrack that fits just as well.

Released just a year before The Fellowship of the Ring, Radiohead’s “Everything In Its Right Place” has the same impact as Shore’s “My Precious,” but instead of copying the big-movie sound, it reflects Gollum’s split personality. Shore’s music uses sweeping orchestras for the big screen, while Radiohead’s track uses steady, mechanical repetition.

The song’s distorted, looping vocals and tense keyboard parts reflect Gollum’s endless cycle between Sméagol and the creature. While things seemed to be going well for the bearer of the One Ring, eventually, his life descends into chaos.
