Recommended music: R.E.M. – Driver 8
It’s #WhateverWednesday, and since my action figures are still packed up and waiting for a new display, I’m digging into the archives and revisiting some old toys for now.
The 1985 Back to the Future soundtrack features unforgettable songs, from 1980s pop-rock to classic 1950s R&B, plus Alan Silvestri’s orchestral score. When I first wrote about the NECA BTTF figures, it was easy to pair these tracks with certain characters. Still, I think another great song fits this Marty figure.
“Driver 8” by R.E.M. is a great non-soundtrack choice for Marty and other figures from this line, as it reflects both 1985 and Marty’s journey in the film. The song was also released in late summer 1985, just after the movie’s debut, which helps place Marty in a specific moment in American culture without relying on Alan Silvestri’s score.
The song’s driving beat matches Marty’s constant movement throughout the film. Whether he’s skateboarding through Hill Valley, hanging onto a pickup truck, or speeding in the DeLorean, the rhythm fits him well.
