Recommended music: Carl Douglas – Kung Fu Fighting
It’s another #TurtleTuesday, and since my action figures are still packed and waiting for a new display, I’ll dig up some more old toys from the archives today.
There are plenty of cartoon versions of Leonardo in NECA Toys’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line, but the ‘Pizza Club’ version is a real step up from the first release. I’m not sure why I originally paired it with Al Green—maybe it was the “make me happy” lyric, since this figure always puts me in a good mood, and Leonardo is green like the rest of the turtles. Still, I think there’s another song that fits this Leo just as well.
“Kung Fu Fighting” by Carl Douglas is the ultimate match for the NECA Pizza Club Leonardo figure. It connects Leonardo’s serious side as a martial arts master with the fun, silly vibe of the 1980s cartoon. As the leader in blue, Leonardo is all about discipline, sword skills, and dojo training.
The song’s catchy disco beat adds a playful touch that matches his dedication and martial arts background. The Pizza Club version is also unique, with fun accessories like the weird pepperoni-and-marshmallow pizza and evil robot head. Carl Douglas’s upbeat song brings out that Saturday-morning cartoon feel, adding a cheesy twist to Leo’s serious katanas.
