Recommended music: Joanie Madden
It’s #TolkienThursday, and since my action figures are still packed up and awaiting a new display, I’ll pull toys from the archives back into play.
Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings scores offer plenty of great pieces that could fit Merry. On the blog, though, I paired him with more modern music. Still, I think something much older might suit the hobbit just as well.
The Toy Biz Fellowship of the Ring Merry figure shows Meriadoc Brandybuck in his original Shire outfit, with a simple cloak and rustic vest. Modern music may break the timeless fantasy, while the 18th-century Irish tune “The South Wind” (An Ghaoth Aneas) fits Tolkien’s world and Merry’s story perfectly.
Played on traditional instruments like the wooden flute, tin whistle, and harp, its soft melody evokes the peaceful Shire. As a tribute to a beloved, peaceful home, the song reflects Merry’s strong ties to the Brandywine region before war changes everything in Middle-earth.
