On this #StarWarsSaturday, we’re looking ahead to the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December and checking out trading cards from Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing. Today, I’m sharing base card number 109 -Baze Malbus Attacks!
Since my action figures are still packed away, waiting for a new display, the cards keep coming out to play.
Topps released the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to help build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set includes 100 cards covering stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series from that era, including the creation and destruction of the Death Star. The set also includes 10 cards featuring characters and scenes from the Rogue One Teaser Trailer, released a few months earlier.
Baze Malbus played a significant role in the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story promotional campaigns, helping set the film’s gritty, war-movie tone. Marketing materials like character posters, Empire magazine covers, and trailers highlighted his heavy repeating cannon, red-accented armor, and tough attitude. He was often shown alongside his spiritual partner Chirrut Îmwe [see last week’s post]. Baze’s bold look and action scenes came to represent the rebellion’s tough, boots-on-the-ground infantry.
Beyond the marketing, Baze stands out because he brings the story down to earth with his loyalty. At first, he’s a cynic who lost faith in the Force and left the Guardian temple on Jedha, but his story is really about deep devotion. He doesn’t fight for big ideas—he fights because of his strong bond with Chirrut.
Watching him go from a disillusioned survivor to a fierce defender adds real emotional depth, all within about an hour and 20 minutes. In his last moments on Scarif, when he repeats his friend’s mantra before his sacrifice, it becomes one of the most moving moments in Star Wars, though it is likely overshadowed by several other emotional scenes also landing in the last act of Rogue One.
