Recommended music: The Penguins – Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)
It’s #WhateverWednesday, and since my action figures are still packed up and waiting for a new display, I’m digging into the archives and revisiting some old toys for now.
Though the 1985 Back to the Future soundtrack features unforgettable songs, from classic 1950s R&B to 1980s pop, as well as Alan Silvestri’s orchestral score, it does not feature Bo Diddley. When I first wrote about the NECA BTTF figures, I thought Bo Diddley at least fit the era shown in the 1955 scenes, but I’ve now found another tune that works just as well.
“Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)” by The Penguins is an “ultimate” musical pairing for the NECA Ultimate Biff 1955 figure because it captures the exact cinematic tension of his iconic downfall at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. In the movie, Biff’s swaggering intimidation seems to rub off on George McFly, who finally knocks him out when his future wife, Loraine (played by Lea Thompson), is in distress. Later, when this romantic doo-wop ballad plays in the background, George stands up for himself again, reigniting the fading Marty.
