It’s another #FunkoFriday, and today we’re featuring the Funko Pop! Vinyl Saga – Marko (Sword) #07!
In the epic space opera Saga, Marko is the main male character and the emotional center of the story’s first half. The horned magic-user comes from the moon Wreath and starts the series as a deserter from the Long War.
Despite being a highly skilled swordsman, Marko is defined by his vow of non-violence. His struggle to maintain his pacifism while protecting his family from relentless bounty hunters is a central conflict of the story, alongside his relationship with Alana, a soldier from the enemy planet Landfall. Together, they represent a forbidden union, and their primary goal is the survival and upbringing of their daughter, Hazel. By falling in love with the enemy, Marko becomes a symbol of the possibility of peace, making him a high-priority target for both warring governments.
Although the comic started in 2012, Image Comics took a long time to release licensed Saga merchandise. Most toy deals depend on the marketing budgets of movie or television adaptations. Brian K. Vaughan has famously stated that he and Fiona Staples have no interest in a film or TV adaptation. They designed Saga to do things “only comics can do.” Without a blockbuster movie or a hit Netflix show to “anchor” the brand, major toy manufacturers are less likely to produce a full line of action figures or statues.
Thankfully, Funko released more than a dozen Pop! Vinyl figures (including variants) in 2018. This figure of Marko is a good likeness of the character, albeit with an oversized head and blacked-out eyes, and it features his signature sword and a magic spell sculpted in his other hand.
