Rogue One: Mission Briefing Part 6

Recommended music: Gustav Holst – Uranus, The Magician

This #SomethingElseSunday, we’re looking ahead to the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December. Check out these trading cards from Topps Star Wars: Rogue One: Mission Briefing!

I know what you’re thinking. Dale, it’s not Star Wars Saturday, I was looking forward to seeing ACTION FIGURES today, not trading cards! Well, I’ve got some news: the entire action figure collection has been in storage for more than 10 weeks before a move to a new display space. I took over 100 days’ worth of toy photos and prepared a daily blog schedule well into next year; however, I’ve had to revise those plans several times because the big move hasn’t happened yet.

I’m still planning new daily content for another month before summer reruns, but we will be breaking away from our regular daily themes. Short story long, there is plenty of Star Wars content ahead:

Topps launched the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set includes 100 cards featuring stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series of that era, highlighting major events such as the creation and destruction of the Death Star.

While the base set spent the first 20 cards summarizing the prequels, Clone Wars, and Rebels, we now get to dive into my favorite era of Star Wars, the Original Trilogy. I’ll share more about the set tomorrow. Today, I want to focus on four cards that kick off the original story from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

After the opening text crawl in the original Star Wars, the Imperial Star Destroyer Devastator appears in an equally iconic moment of movie history, intercepting the Tantive IV above Tatooine. The huge ship grabs the rebel corvette with its tractor beam, shuts down its engines, and pulls it into the main hangar for boarding and taking the stolen Death Star plans.

After a brief firefight in the corridors of the Tantive IV, Stormtroopers move in and stand ready. Darth Vader, dressed in black armor, steps through the doorway and into the minds of filmgoers around the world. His heavy, mechanical breathing echoes as he looks over the fallen rebels and the hallway.

Knowing she’s about to be caught, Princess Leia quickly places the data card with the stolen Death Star plans into R2-D2’s memory, along with a holographic message for Obi-Wan Kenobi, and sends the droid off to escape the ship.

R2-D2 and C-3PO make their way through the chaos and jump into an escape pod. As it heads toward Tatooine, Imperial gunners see it but don’t shoot because there are no life signs. The droids escape with the Death Star plans. This scene is spoofed in the Star Wars Family Guy Blue Harvest episode, but it’s true—a single shot from the Empire could have ended the path of the Death Star plans right then and there.

Yes, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie is still showing in theaters, along with Masters of the Universe. If you haven’t seen them yet, try to catch them on the big screen before they leave. I’m excited for another Star Wars anniversary coming up, so I’ll be back tomorrow with more Star Wars talk!
