Rogue One: Mission Briefing Part 7

Recommended music: John Williams – The Princess Appears

Today, we’re looking ahead to the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December. Check out these trading cards from Topps Star Wars: Rogue One: Mission Briefing!

That’s right, no Masters of the Universe or action figures today. With over 99% of my action figure collection still in storage for the past few months, awaiting a new display space [see yesterday’s news], let’s continue talking about trading cards.

Topps released the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set includes 100 cards featuring stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series of that era, highlighting major moments such as the creation and destruction of the Death Star.

Today, I want to cover the next four cards telling the original story from 1977’s Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Conversations with Darth Vader aboard the Tantive IV are terrifying, one-sided interrogations. He uses physical intimidation, a booming voice, and literal throat-chokes to break your resolve. Defiance is useless. Whether he’s questioning Captain Antilles or Princess Leia, Vader expects total obedience and ignores any claims of political immunity as he hunts for the stolen Death Star plans with deadly determination.

Buying R2-D2 and C-3PO from the Jawas is a stroke of desperate luck. Owen Lars picks out C-3PO since the droid understands the “binary language of moisture vaporators” and a red R5-D4 unit to work the fields, I guess. Thankfully, when R5’s motivator blows (on purpose?), Luke suggests R2-D2 instead. This small moment on a dusty Tatooine farm ends up connecting the son of Skywalker to the whole galactic rebellion.

Inside his small Tatooine hut, Obi-Wan opens Luke’s eyes to a bigger universe. He tells Luke about Anakin Skywalker’s past as a Jedi Knight (from a certain point of view) and gives him his father’s lightsaber. By explaining the Force and how the Jedi were betrayed by Darth Vader, Ben turns a galaxy-wide tragedy into Luke’s own personal call to adventure.

Princess Leia’s hologram is a desperate and formal request for help. Hidden inside R2-D2, she asks Obi-Wan Kenobi, who served her father in the Clone Wars, to bring the stolen Death Star plans safely to Alderaan. Her message ends with the famous, heartfelt line, “You’re my only hope,” and sets Luke’s whole journey in motion.

Yes, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie is still showing in theaters, along with Masters of the Universe. If you haven’t seen them yet, try to catch them on the big screen before they leave. I’m excited for another Star Wars anniversary coming up, so I’ll be back tomorrow with more Star Wars talk!
