Rogue One: Mission Briefing Part 8

Recommended music: Nine Inch Nails – The Great Destroyer

Today, we’re looking ahead to the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December. Check out these trading cards from Topps Star Wars: Rogue One: Mission Briefing!

That’s right, there won’t be any Ninja Turtles or other action figures today. Since more than 99% of my action figure collection remains in storage while I wait for a new display space [see Sunday’s news], I’ll keep talking about trading cards.

Topps released the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set includes 100 cards featuring stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series of that era, highlighting major moments such as the creation and destruction of the Death Star.

Today, I want to cover the next four cards, telling more of the original story from 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

Grand Moff Tarkin and Imperial officers discuss the Death Star’s readiness and the dissolution of the Senate. When Admiral Motti mocks the Force, Darth Vader chokes him to prove its power, but Tarkin steps in, making it clear who is in charge.

Imperial stormtroopers tracking the stolen Death Star plans attack the Lars homestead, killing Luke Skywalker’s aunt Beru and uncle Owen and burning their home. This tragedy destroys Luke’s old life, prompting him to leave Tatooine with Obi-Wan Kenobi.

When sandtroopers stop Luke and Obi-Wan at a Mos Eisley checkpoint, Obi-Wan uses a Jedi mind trick to convince the lead trooper that “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for,” allowing them to pass. This is the first time we see Obi-Wan using the Force (unless you count some kind of healing he may have done for Luke after the Tusken Raider attack). It made you wonder what else he could do with his abilities.

In the Mos Eisley cantina, Obi-Wan and Luke meet Han Solo, the cocky captain of the Millennium Falcon, who brags that his ship “made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs.” This line didn’t make a ton of sense until it was expanded further in Solo over 40 years later, but this scene is still one of my favorites from any movie.

Yes, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie is still showing in theaters, along with Masters of the Universe. If you haven’t seen them yet, try to catch them on the big screen before they leave. I’m excited for another Star Wars anniversary coming up, so I’ll be back tomorrow with more Star Wars talk!
