Since more than 99% of my action figure collection remains in storage while I wait for a new display space [see Sunday’s news], I’ll keep talking about trading cards. When the toys are away, the cards will play… or something like that. 😄
Topps released the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set includes 100 cards featuring stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series of that era, highlighting major moments such as the creation and destruction of the Death Star.
Today, I want to cover the next four cards, telling more of the original story from 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
Alderaan, a peaceful world of culture and the planet where Leia was raised, was annihilated by the Death Star’s superlaser. Grand Moff Tarkin ordered its destruction to demonstrate the space station’s power and break the spirit of the Rebel Alliance, turning a thriving paradise into an asteroid field in seconds.
Obi-Wan Kenobi doesn’t witness Alderaan’s destruction on a screen. Instead, he senses it through the Force while aboard the Millennium Falcon. “I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.”
Soon after, the ship emerges from hyperspace into the asteroid field left by the Death Star. Han notices that their coordinates match those of Alderaan, but says it isn’t there. Obi-Wan explains the grim reality to the group: “Destroyed… by the Empire.”
Obi-Wan quickly sees that the huge object ahead isn’t a moon, but the Empire’s space station: “That’s no moon. It’s a space station.” Before the crew can escape, the Death Star catches the Falcon in its tractor beam and pulls them into the hangar bay.
Darth Vader senses Kenobi’s arrival through the Force and says, “I feel a presence, a presence I’ve not felt since…” This line shows that the connection between master and apprentice still exists, even on opposite sides of The Force. Since Revenge of the Sith in 2005 and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series in 2022, the moment of their last meeting has changed.
Yes, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie is still showing in theaters, along with Masters of the Universe. If you haven’t seen them yet, try to catch them on the big screen before they leave. I’m excited for another Star Wars anniversary coming up, so I’ll be back tomorrow with more Star Wars talk!
