This #SomethingElseSunday, I’m sharing a kind of greatest hits. I’ve put together a Spotify playlist featuring music from the blog that I’m calling Now That’s What I Call Toy Music!
Now That’s What I Call Music! started in the UK in 1983 as a project between Virgin and EMI to bring together recent chart hits on one album. Its name came from a 1920s Danish bacon poster with a singing pig. While compilation albums certainly existed prior to the 1980s, the idea transformed the music industry by providing people with a legal, high-quality alternative to bootlegs.
The brand quickly became a cultural hit and reached the United States in 1998 with Now! 1, which sold eight million copies. Its bold block-letter logo and fast release schedule helped it move easily from vinyl and cassettes to CDs, digital downloads, and streaming playlists.
There are now over 100 numbered albums in the UK and almost 100 in the US, plus many special editions for different music styles. Now! is still a go-to collection and one of the longest-running audio snapshots of pop culture worldwide.
You may be wondering what this has to do with talking about toys every day. I try to have a daily theme for whichever toy I’m discussing and accompany the picture and text with music that fits the theme. Although a couple of repeats have slipped in over the years, nearly all the 1000+ posts have a unique song embedded in Instagram and are also streamable on YouTube if you read the post via email or on dalestoys.com.
While I’m taking a break from new photography at the moment [see last Sunday’s post], I decided to put together a Spotify playlist with music from the #SomethingElseSunday posts from the blog’s first year. Not every song I’ve shared is on Spotify, but many are, so you’ll notice a theme pretty quickly.
