On this #StarWarsSaturday, we’re looking ahead to the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December and checking out trading cards from Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing. Today, I’m sharing base card number 104 – Rebel Pilots Depart!
Since my action figures are still packed away, waiting for a new display, the cards keep coming out to play.
Topps released the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to help build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set includes 100 cards covering stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series from that era, including the creation and destruction of the Death Star. The set also includes 10 cards featuring characters and scenes from the Rogue One Teaser Trailer, which came out a few months earlier.
In the Rogue One teaser trailer, the unknown Rebel pilots and ground troops at the Great Temple on Yavin 4 help set a more grounded, military tone for the film. Instead of focusing on Jedi stories, director Gareth Edwards places Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso in the middle of an active army. The unnamed recruits, wearing worn-out fatigues and flight suits, make it clear that the Rebellion is an underdog coalition where everyday soldiers bear the weight of war.
These background characters on Yavin help visually connect Rogue One to A New Hope just like you imagined. Tactical officers, mechanics, and pilots moving through the familiar hangar bay create a direct link to the original 1977 film. Their presence shows Jyn, who is not part of any group, and Cassian, an experienced intelligence officer, working with Mon Mothma’s larger organization. This highlights how much teamwork is needed to plan risky secret missions.
To make the scenes look more real, Lucasfilm used actual British military members and veterans as extras on Yavin. Former pilots, soldiers, and navy crew wore Rebel flight suits, which made the background movements and routines feel more authentic on screen.
