Ultimate Marty McFly ‘Audition’ (Reblog)

Recommended music: Chuck Berry – Johnny B. Goode

It’s #WhateverWednesday, and since my action figures are still packed waiting for a new display, archive posts will come into play. After 1100+ posts on the blog, we’ll keep revisiting some old toys for now.

When I first posted about the “Audition” Marty from NECA’s Back to the Future line, I thought Huey Lewis’s “The Power of Love” was the perfect song, since it’s played in the audition scene, even if only for a few chords. But now, I think I’ve found another song that fits just as well.

NECA didn’t make an Ultimate Marty McFly figure in his outfit from the film’s big finale, when Marty plays Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, so this version is the closest match. The figure comes with special accessories that work for either scene: a bright red Gibson electric guitar, a right hand holding a guitar pick you can swap in, and a lively mid-performance head sculpt.

But it’s not just about the accessories. The song itself is a big part of Marty McFly’s story and his personal win. Up until this moment in 1955, Marty deals with a lot of self-doubt and worries that his dreams of being a musician will end up like his dad’s failed hopes. When he grabs the mic to play “Johnny B. Goode,” he really gets into it, duckwalking across the stage and channeling future rock stars. This song marks the exciting turning point where Marty saves himself, brings his parents together, and finally accepts who he is as a musician.
