On this #StarWarsSaturday, we’re looking ahead to the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December and checking out trading cards from Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing. Today, I’m sharing base card number 106 – Battle on the Beach!

Since my action figures are still packed away, waiting for a new display, the cards keep coming out to play.

Topps released the Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading card set in September 2016 to help build excitement for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The main set includes 100 cards covering stories from Episodes I to VI and the animated series from that era, including the creation and destruction of the Death Star. The set also includes 10 cards featuring characters and scenes from the Rogue One Teaser Trailer, released a few months earlier.

The beach battle on the tropical planet Scarif was the main focus of Rogue One’s marketing campaign, helping it stand apart from the main Star Wars saga. Showing ground troops, AT-ACT walkers, and stormtroopers on sunny beaches with turquoise water and palm trees gave the film a bold visual style unseen in the franchise’s first 40 years.

These images appeared in trailers, TV spots, and posters to highlight the film’s identity as a realistic, gritty war movie. The promotional shots echoed famous military footage and classic World War II films, like the D-Day beach landings, and promised viewers an intense, ground-level combat experience.

The teaser trailer also included brief but memorable shots of the main characters running across the beach with the stolen Death Star plans, anchoring the story’s emotional stakes. Though most of this footage did not make it into the finished film because the last act was simplified from our heroes having to go to two towers on Scarif to just one, the beach battle made it clear that Rogue One was about regular soldiers facing the Empire’s overwhelming power.
